HIGHLIGHTS OF Meghalaya tour package from Kolkata

Places to Explore in Meghalaya

Located just south of Assam, the state of Meghalaya is a perfect spot for a getaway in the hills. Though it cannot boast of the dizzying heights of Himachal Pradesh or even Sikkim, there are plenty of things that make this state stand out among the other Seven Sisters.

Shillong

The capital city of Shillong is a great way to introduce some of the running themes of this state. The city is quickly developing, and is a part of the AMRUT program for developing smart cities. The centrepiece of the city, quite literally, is Ward Lake - a scenic park that surrounds a small lake at the city’s centre. Visitors can rent a pedal-powered boat for a ride around this charming horseshoe-shaped lake.

The Police Bazar, named after the fact that it is just outside the oldest police station in the state, is a place where visitors can spend days shopping for locally produced traditional clothing to products from Bangladesh. Another highlight of the Bazar is the impressive array of food on offer, with local favourites along with street food classics from other parts of the country.

The city also caters to those with more refined tastes, with luxury resorts by Marriot and Vivanta providing decadent alternatives to the simpler, home-like atmosphere provided by most hotels in the state.

The Surprising Thing About Shillong Is Its Nightlife And Cafe Culture

In most parts of Northeast India, all shops close after sunset. Shillong, on the other hand, opens up. A walk around the city centre in the evening will leave you with no doubt that the people of this state love music. Many restaurants, cafes and bars offer live music as an attraction, with local musicians playing everything from Bollywood hits, classic rock, pop, jazz and blues.

Immerse Yourself In the Local Customs

A short drive to Shillong Peak provides a stunning view of the city from above, and a stunning view of the East Khasi Hills. Another great place nearby is the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, which is best experienced with a local guide to explain the customs of the Khasi people and how the forest is tied in with it.

These are just some of the experiences that you can have on your Shillong tour package from Kolkata.

Sohra (Cherrapunji)

The town of Sohra, popularly known as Cherrapunji, is famous as the wettest place on earth. The town holds two Guinness World Records, both for receiving the most rain in a single year. However, in recent years, the nearby town of Mawsynram has taken the title. One of Cherrapunji’s most popular attractions is the Seven Sisters Falls, a stunning rock face overlooking the plains of Bangladesh.

Another popular attraction near Cherrapunji is the Arwah Cave, with fossils of sea creatures from millions of years ago are visible on the cave walls. The walk to the cave itself is gorgeous, with incredible views of the waterfalls nearby. The nearby Lawshynna cave is another spectacular adventure for those with the urge to explore. There are even more places to explore, which you can experience on your Cherrapunji holiday package from Kolkata.

Living Root Bridges

A big attraction of this state are the Living Root Bridges. These are a testament to the connection with nature that the people of this State share. The bridges are formed over decades, starting with the strategic planting of trees on each side.

The trees planted are known as the rubber fig tree. This tree has aerial roots, which begin forming about a decade into the tree’s development. Bamboo shoots are strategically placed so that these roots form around them.

It may take another decade or more for the aerial roots to gain the strength required to support the weight of people on those bamboo shoots. This practice is only seen in Meghalaya, and nothing similar has been observed elsewhere in the world.

The Living Root Bridges Of Meghalaya Are A Stunning Sight

The living root bridges of Meghalaya are stunning, making you feel as though you are in a fantasy novel. Usually located over small streams, some are particularly impressive. The longest living root bridge is in the village of Mawkyrnot, with a length of 53 metres. The double decker-living root bridge at Nongriat is another impressive sight, especially with the nearby Rainbow Falls being a bonus.

Dawki - Asia’s Cleanest River

The border town of Dawki is another spectacular spot for nature lovers. The river Umngot, popularly called the Dawki River, flows through this town. It is gaining popularity on social media as the world’s cleanest river, with the riverbed visible beneath the blue waters. Residents will inform you that the clear waters are best enjoyed with the adrenaline rush of pack rafting or kayaking.

Experience The Cleanest Village In Asia

Nearby this incredible river is the town of Mawlynnong, often cited as the cleanest village in Asia. This charming village seems pulled right out of an ideal village in a Hans Christensen Anderson story, with picturesque colourful houses and small churches. The streets are lined with flowering plants, making spring the best time to visit this town. The West Jaintia Hills contain many other amazing sights, discover them with your loved ones on your Dawki River tour from Kolkata!

Adventure Tourism In Meghalaya

A big draw of Meghalaya is its potential for adventure tourism. Many incredible experiences are available at various points of the state. Bungee jumping is a popular activity around Shillong, along with many other scenic spots around the state. Paragliding is also available, and gives you a chance to appreciate the fact that over 75% of the state is covered by greenery

Umiam Lake is incredibly popular in Meghalaya and Assam, as it is a hotspot for all sorts of watersports - from kayaking to freshwater scuba diving.

Explore The Mysteries Of Asia’s Longest Cave!

The caves of Meghalaya are also becoming incredibly popular, with these underground complexes gaining popularity among the international caving community. New caves are being discovered at a rapid pace, and major scientific discoveries are even pushing famous universities to provide grants for continued expeditions.

The Mawmluh Cave has redefined humanity’s understanding of the evolution of the planet, leading to stratigraphers naming the current geological era the Meghalayan Age. Another impressive cave is Liat Prah, one of the longest caves in Asia. It stretches over 30 kilometres underground, and is mostly uncharted.

The Best Way To Experience Northeast India Is On Foot

With deep lush forests, trekking in Meghalaya is an absolute treat. There are innumerable trekking routes, and settlements are relatively close. However, a local guide is a must as they are aware of local customs, specifically which areas are sacred and which areas are good for camping.

Unpredictable Weather In Meghalaya

The state is also known for its unpredictable weather, which during the rainy season means that you will be lugging around extra clothing. Temperatures may rise or fall by 10 degrees during the day, which means packing winter clothing even at the height of summer. However, the sights you will encounter during your treks will more than make up for the extra load on your shoulders.

Best time to visit Meghalaya

Nestled in the northeastern part of India, Meghalaya offers a unique experience throughout the year, each season showcasing its captivating allure. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or a cultural explorer, the best time to visit this incredible destination depends on the activities that ignite your passion.

March to May

As winter fades away, Meghalaya blossoms into a vibrant paradise during the spring months (March to May). The weather remains pleasant, with blooming flowers and lush green landscapes. If you visit during this time, make sure to explore the mesmerising Mawlynnong Village, often referred to as "Asia's Cleanest Village." Immerse yourself in the local Khasi culture, witness the stunning living root bridges, and take leisurely walks through picturesque meadows.

June to August

Summer (June to August) in Meghalaya provides a serene escape from scorching temperatures in other parts of the country. This season brings occasional showers, which add to the region's charm. Explore the serene hill station of Shillong, known as the "Scotland of the East." Take a boat ride on the tranquil Umiam Lake or visit the Elephant Falls, where cascading waters create a picturesque setting. Don't forget to sample the local delicacies and soak in the lively atmosphere at Police Bazar.

August to October

Meghalaya, which means "Abode of Clouds," is at its enchanting best during the monsoon (August to October). The region receives heavy rainfall, transforming it into a lush green paradise. Experience the awe-inspiring living root bridges of Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, which come alive during this season. Trek through misty landscapes, be mesmerised by numerous waterfalls, and witness the majestic Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in India.

November to February

Winter (November to February) unveils a different facet of Meghalaya, with chilly temperatures and occasional fog. For adventure enthusiasts, this is the ideal time to explore the magnificent caves of Meghalaya, such as the Mawsmai Cave and the Krem Mawmluh Cave. Discover the thrill of spelunking as you navigate through stunning limestone formations. Also, embark on a thrilling trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat and soak in the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.

Meghalaya Extends a Year-Round Invitation to Visitors

Meghalaya offers an abundance of natural wonders and cultural delights throughout the year, making it a truly captivating destination. The best time to visit this picturesque land depends on the activities that ignite your soul.

Whether it's witnessing the blooming flowers in spring, seeking serenity in the hills during summer, revelling in the rain-drenched wonderland of monsoon, or embracing the chilly charms of winter, Meghalaya has something to offer to every traveller. So pack your bags, prepare your camera, and get ready to embark on a memorable journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Meghalaya!

Visited Thailand (Bangkok & Phuket) with my family in January 2024 through this tour operating company. They prepared a customised itinerary for us, booked our hotels at both locations and arranged all associated transportation and sight-seeing tours. We had an enjoyable trip. Both hotels were good. The tours and transportation too were good and very well arranged by their local tour partners. They had created an Whatsapp group for close monitoring of our tour, which was very effective and assuring. Many thanks to the Flying Squirrel Holidays team !
