Jim Corbett National Park rests on the lap of nature, between the Nainital and PauriGarhwal district of Uttarakhand. The national park is spread over 1318.54 sq. km of land. Out of this, the core area is 520 sq km and the buffer area is 797.72 sq km. Established in 1936, it is one of the oldest national parks in India. It was founded by Sir Jim Corbett and during the British period, it was called the Hailey National Park. History has it that back then the villagers were horrified by the man-eating majestic tigers. Jim Corbett killed a lot of these man-eating tigers, but he found out that tigers preferred to kill humansunder some specific situations or conditions, either when they were threatened by humans or if they weren’t capable of hunting.
Jim Corbett requested the government to have a place where tigers could live without any danger. It was under his request that Hailey National Park was established to provide a saferefuge for tigers. The Park was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1956. The Project Tiger was launched in 1973 for the first time in the park.
