Ladakh has beautiful people and Buddhism is certainly one of the forces that have shaped its landscape and culture. Leh, the capital of Ladakh is where the river Zanskar meets river Indus. A favorite hiking locale, known for some of the best hikes in India, Leh is flanked on the one side by cream-coloured desert, and on the other by a swathe of lush irrigated farmland. Pretty flags in and around the monasteries with stunningly colorful interiors dot this beautiful part of the Himalayas. At Leh, you can stay at one of our recommended hotels or enjoy a homestay in the quaint villages of Stok, Likhir, and Shey. You can also spend nights in luxury traveling camps that introduces the discerning traveler to different adventures in out-of-the-ordinary locales. During such camp-stays, you can watch a game of polo, raft down the Indus and even enjoy a picnic lunch in the beautiful picturesque valleys.

On this trip, we take you to the 12-storied Thiksey Monastery (dating back to 16th century), the 17th century Hemis Monastery(principal seat of the Drukpa Monastic order), the 17th century gigantic copper-gilt statue of the Buddha in the Shey Palace, Lamayuru monastery, and the 11th century Alchi Choskor (the oldest surviving monastic heritage of Ladakh, a UNESCO heritage site). The site of the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers is a dramatic one as is the 140-km long and 5-km wide Pangong Lake at 14,500 feet on the Indo-China border.

During the Ladakh trip, you will go as high as 18,380 feet during our Nubra Valley trip. Nubra is the highest motorable road in the world. A truly gorgeous drive through one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes where a sense of exquisite beauty is heightened by the chants of monks in the distance.

While in Leh don’t forget to try the local dishes – Tibetan Hot Pot, Wonton Pishi Soup, or the delicious Shabalay (a freshly baked meat or vegetable-filled bun), and the special Yak Cheeze Pizza. Local produce like potatoes, pumpkins, beetroot, and beans are made into delicious Ladakhi cuisine accompanied by meat dishes. Mutton and chicken are the commonly consumed, but the staple Ladakhi food is Sku and Thukpa (made of wheat flour), Pava (made of status) and Chamber (local bread)
